News, or What I’ve done this Summer, Part 3

August 16th, 2008

Whatcha been doin?

Part 3 of 4

Here’s a few related things to the Time Traveler Show and Wonder Audio.

Sfoha space dog
SFOHA

The Science Fiction Oral History Association has some fantastic recording of Science Fiction authors, artists, and fans.  It’s a non-profit that started in the mid-1970s, which has laid fallow a couple of times as the organization has semi-disolved.  Usually due the passing away of key board members.  There’s a lot of work in digitizing and obtaining rights from the recorded participants.  Some of the recordings have shown up as Time Traveler Shows.  Isaac Asimov, Fred Pohl, Jack Williamson and Arthur C. Clarke has been on the show thanks to SFOHA.  I’ve been actively going to board meetings, running for a board position and doing some digitizing and other volunteer activities.  I’ve been recording at local cons for SFOHA as well as for TTS.  It’s a fantastic resource and I encourage you to contribute.  They have a PayPal link and to be a voting member is only $5.

SFFaudio

I’m a reviewer and editor at SFFaudio.com.  Fantastic site. Loved it before I got invited to contribute and still love it.  They have me listed as a Senior Editor.  It’s almost honorary unfortunately.  What I mean be that is I don’t do as much there as I would like.  Recently I did a new review and a news post.  I’d love to do a couple of reviews a month, but realistically I’m shooting for one.

Scatterpod

Since this is about what I’ve been up to this Summer, I should mention the reading I did for Scatterpod.  You can read some of the details in a previous posting.  I do want to comment on being on the other side of the mic.  I’m the host of TTS, but with one flash fiction exception, I haven’t been a narrator.  It was a lot of fun and diffulcult.  I’d give myself a letter grade of about B- for my reading (like I have any objectivity about my own reading).  It’s rough, stilted and overdramatic in parts with some bad dialect thrown in.  But I give myself credit for no half measures.  I’ve could have played it a bit safer and pulled back a little, but I went for it.  It’s given me the bug to record some more.  I’m planning on doing a story this Fall for TTS.  Will I be recording for Wonder Audio?  No, not unless I vastly improve, and I don’t see myself devoting enough time to be truly professional.  So I’ll do it for fun and plan to donate my performances to LibriVox.

Part 4 will be about The Future of Wonder Audio and The Time Traveler Show

Orson Scott Card Selects - Star Born by Andre Norton

April 28th, 2008

Orson Scott Card Selects - Star BornOrson Scott Card Selects Star Born by Andre Norton and published by Wonder Audio for the first title in an exciting new feature at Audible.com.

Here’s how Audible describes it:
Orson Scott Card Selects:

In an exclusive relationship, Audible is launching a monthly recommendation program with Hugo Award-winning Orson Scott Card, the author of the classic Ender’s Game, and one of the industry’s best-selling writers. Card will provide exclusive audio critiques of each selection.

“It’s easy for great novels and novellas to get lost in the bookstore - not everything can get front-of-store display!” Card said. “That’s what I’ll be doing with ‘OSC Selects’ - moving new and classic sci-fi and fantasy right to the front, so fans will have a better chance of noticing terrific stories performed by first-rate readers.”

“Orson Scott Card Selects” kicks off with the April selection, Star Born by Andre Norton.

Orson Scott Card calls Star Born - “Excellent, first rate, adult science fiction….”

Wonder Audio is the publishing company of The Time Traveler Show.  The Time Traveler has a smile on his face :)

The Fix reviews Wonder Audio

February 5th, 2008

the fix short fiction reviewThe Fix: Short Fiction Review, has some nice things to say about some Wonder Audio titles.  Scott Danielson penned the article.  Scott is a fine writer who’s published short fiction in Orson Scott Card’s Intergalactic Medicine Show, reviews for Audiofile Magazine, and he is a Co-Founder/Contributing Editor to SFFaudio.  He’s got some excellent audiobook titles as well at Deuce Audio

Here’s an excerpt from the article:Science fiction often tells us that we need to adjust our thinking. We humans fall into our ways of viewing the universe and glue ourselves to them so tightly that it becomes difficult to contemplate that things could be different. “The Devil on Salvation Bluff” by Jack Vance puts some missionaries on a planet where the culture works a little differently. The natives act in a chaotic fashion that reflects their planet’s natural surroundings, and the missionaries cling to sanity through a clock that they installed on Salvation Bluff. Through the clock (and only the clock) they know whether it’s night or day, because the planet goes through sunsets and sunrises almost randomly. Understanding only comes when the missionaries are forced to let go of their way of thinking. Candace Platt’s reading adds a great tone to the story, making for a very pleasant listen.

Scott also reviews Fondly Fahrenheit by Alfred Bester read by Pat Bottino, and The Game of Rat and Dragon by Cordwainer Smith read by Mathew Wayne Selznick
